India Mission
India is in the midst of an ongoing food crisis due to the country-wide Corona virus lockdown.
India is a country where 800 million people live on $2 per day or less. Most people earn their living by farm work or day labor. On March 24th, 2020 the government of India ordered a nation-wide lockdown. People are not allowed out of their homes except for a few hours a day to buy food. All services and shops closed except for medical facilities, banks, grocery shops and other essential services. Commercial and private establishments are closed. All educational institutions, places of worship, public and private transport and social gatherings are banned. The lockdown has been extended to June 30. Many workers from small villages who work in large cities and send their money home were stranded without warning and many had to walk hundreds of miles to get home. Anyone who fails to follow the restrictions can face up to a year in jail. The Main Street Church of Christ in Dallas, Texas has been providing small amounts of funds to congregations ($30 - $150) to purchase and distribute rice, cooking oil, vegetables and other foodstuffs to be distributed to widows and the poorest families.
